Shop & Scan is a website that pays you to scan bar codes and record your shopping habits. Nielsen is another company that also allows you to do something similar.

What will I need to do?

You don’t really have to go out of your way to take part in this, simply just do your regular shop. When you have done this take a photo of the receipt and scan the bar code of each product. After that transmit the data each week. That’s all there is to it.

You can use both a flatbed scanner or a camera to capture the image of the receipt. Pick the one that is easiest for you.

Sometimes the handheld bar code scanner will accumulate dirt on the end after a while and will not scan properly. If this happens, all you need to do is give it a quick wipe down with a soft cloth and it should start working again.

They may also want to know which stores you visit and how much money you have spent. As well, you will need to take into consideration items without bar codes such as loose fruit and vegetables. Of course, you clearly can’t scan these kinds of items without a bar code but it’s still important to log them.

What about products without bar codes?

If you take a look inside the booklet that you will receive, there is lots of useful advice. If you have any problems then this will be made even clearer once you read the booklet in more detail.

There are pages specifically made up of bar codes for the products that don’t have bar codes. For example, there is a page for pictures of fruit with corresponding bar codes next to them. Consequently, all you have to do is scan the bar code next to the photo that most accurately describes what you purchase.

How do I apply for this?

It can be tricky but if you want to sign up then you will need an invitation number. This has to be referred to you by an already existing member. The company will be warn you about not using somebody else’s invitation number. Clearly, this is unfair so be careful not to break this rule.

It is usually invitation only however there is an alternative way of applying. This is to visit and fill in the application form. This is also useful if you want to invite friends to join you as a member.

On occasion, they don’t accept certain people if they are part of a specific demographic. You will just have to be patient if this happens and try again at a different time. Also, you will be unable to register if you are using an Apple Mac or Windows 2000 or earlier. This is because they won’t be compatible.

How did this company get started?

This organisation originated in London as a market research business. They are actually part of another company called the Kantar Worldpanel or Kantar Group as some people know them by. They also operate globally in over 50 countries.

It might surprise you to hear about just how long Kantar Worldpanel has been running. They were one of the first companies in the UK to offer consumer panels like this one. Not to mention, they have been running for over 40 years.

Can I trust them?

Shop & Scan follows the rules of MRS code of conduct which is why they are so established and trusted by many. I personally have been using them for a long time and they have always been reliable for me. They have also got a fairly decent rating on trustpilot.

What equipment do I need?

They will send you a free handheld scanner, a USB cable and a helpful booklet before you start. You will also receive a free fridge magnet if you are lucky.

They have given this scanner the nickname of ‘the clicker’ which is useful to know for reference. If you get stuck, then the booklet contains all the information you could ever wish to know. The pages in the booklet are color-coded to make it easier for you to follow.

In this case, the USB cable has two functions. The first function is so that you can recharge your scanner from your computer. This is vital when the battery runs low, or runs out completely. The second and most important use on the other hand is to transmit your weekly bar code data to the company.

Is there a limit to how much shopping I can scan?

The more shopping you do, the more potential earnings that you can make. Be that as it may, if you don’t do any shopping during the week then there is always the option to say that you didn’t buy anything. This is fine as long as you don’t make it a regular occurrence.

How will I be rewarded?

There is a separate rewards account that you will need to register and log in to when it comes to redeeming rewards.

The only real downside is that there isn’t a cash or PayPal option at the moment but this might change in the future. They reward you with points instead which you can use to redeem various gift cards.  Learn the secrets to true wealth, abundance and financial freedom at

You will earn 1100 points for a successful weekly scanner transmission and 500 points for each receipt that you upload. It’s fairly rare but they sometimes offer surveys for extra income.

The panel will distribute points for the prior week every Monday. You will usually need to accumulate at least 10000 points in order to redeem a £10 gift card/voucher.

I’ve found that redeeming Amazon gift cards accordingly offer the best value. There is also a catalogue of different products you can buy using your points.

You can earn gift cards and vouchers for well known brands such as:

  • Virgin
  • Amazon
  • Thorpe Park
  • Argos
  • Pizza Hut
  • B&Q
  • TGI Fridays
  • Currys
  • Madame Tussauds
  • Debenhams
  • Earnest Jones
  • Odeon
  • H Samuel
  • Cineworld
  • Bella Italia
  • Halfords
  • Alton Towers
  • House of Fraser
  • WHSmiths
  • Next
  • PCWorld
  • Waterstones
  • TopShop

How often will I need to do this?

Regular participation is important so you need to make a habit of doing this on a weekly basis. If you get in to a bad habit of missing out weeks then they may pull you out of the program.

You can book time off under those circumstances if you know that you are going to be unavailable for a long period of time. This is ideal if you ever go on vacation, a business trip or have to be away from home for any other reason.

You have to upload your receipt photos and transmit your scanner data before the end of each week. This is so that they can collect the information you gather in good time. You can do this from your browser or in the same way you can do it from a downloadable program.

Ensure that you have a strong internet connection during transmission. This is because a drop out could interrupt your data transmission and fail the whole thing if you go offline.

You will need to use internet explorer every time you want to transmit bar codes on the website because other browsers will not work.

Also, you will need to install the USB driver from the website before you connect the scanner to your computer. The scanner should make a bleeping sound and the light should flash during transmission.

What happens to my feedback?

Retailers mainly use this data to see how popular or unpopular their products actually are as well as viewing other shopping factors too. Your feedback will influence how shops work in the future.

Shop & Scan won’t use your information without receiving your permission first so don’t feel too concerned about your confidentiality or privacy.

Can I involve my friends in this too?

Other members of your family or household can also take part and benefit from this. Uniquely, large groups can do really well if you collectively pool all your receipts and bar codes together every week.

If multiple people want to take part then you will need to make the company aware of this. It’s best to let them know before you decide to register. Each household member who uses the panel will be given an individual panel number so that the system will know the difference.

What if I need more help?

If you want the panel to explain this to you in more depth then you’ll be glad to hear that you can get additional help. The website has plenty of tutorial videos available that will slowly walk you through everything step by step.

How do I get in contact with them?

If you need help or have any other queries then there are lots of ways that you can get in touch with them. You can use the contact form on the website, call them up on their free phone numbers or email them.

You can phone them up on 08085 560 152 or 0800 389 0342. Furthermore, the email address is

In conclusion, if you do decide to quit for whatever reason then you can at any time. The panel will give you a pre-paid envelope for you to send back your equipment.
