Baking Apple Pie Part 4: Glazing, Reheating & Serving Suggestions

Initially, I was a little worried about how this baking attempt was going to work out. Especially so with it being my first try at this particular recipe. Although, it was going smoothly so far. I’ve also been looking into some fun serving combinations that I can experiment with once the main dish is all wrapped up.

Topping it all off

The recipe states that you should use 1 whisked up egg white when glazing the surface of the pie lid. Although, I found that even this amount was far too much. About half of it dripped over the edge creating a bit of a mess that I needed to clean up.

You can then sprinkle about a teaspoon of sugar on top. It should stay on the pie with ease given the sticky nature of the egg white glaze.

Baking Time

You need to bake this pie at 180 degrees Celsius for roughly 45 minutes (give or take). You will know when it’s truly done as the top of the pie will appear golden brown.

I found that the finished product goes great either hot or cold depending on your mood at the time of eating. However, you might want it warm given the frosty winter months.

Dealing with leftovers

Obviously, you will need to find a way of properly reheating any leftovers if you want it warm. For me, I decided to cover a slice of pie and put it in the microwave oven for 5 minutes to accomplish this.

You could also try reheating in the oven. Although, be careful that you don’t burn the pastry. One can avoid this by covering the top with metal foil. You can also serve apple pie with several things that all go well with it including:

  • double cream
  • natural plain yoghurt
  • custard
  • vanilla ice cream

Storing the pie

It’s safe to refrigerate any leftovers as long as it’s all consumed within a week or two. You can also store it for even longer in the freezer. Use an appropriate, sealable pie container for freezing.

If you’re interested in more details of my baking experience, I roughly followed this recipe. However, I made a few changes of my own so check it out.

More apple related recipes

As soon as I get some more apples, I’ve been thinking about being a little more adventurous. I want to do this by trying to make a caramelized apple tart next time.

All in all, I don’t think my first attempt at baking an apple pie went so bad. As a matter of fact, I’m incredibly proud of the end result. I consider it to be one of my best baking successes so far.

I would definitely make this again if given the opportunity. It’s definitely worthwhile if you find yourself in possession of a large abundance of apples. These may either be close to expiring or you simply don’t know what else to do with them.
