Every day, veterans start their own businesses. Many of these people have a clear idea of what they’d like to do. Others just know that they are tired of following orders. If you fall into the second category, don’t despair. You have many options, and we have tips on how to get started.
Today, I will share a post meant to inspire you on your journey toward entrepreneurship, even if you don’t yet know what that looks like.
Self-evaluation
Before you can choose a business, you must first know your strengths and weaknesses. This is also an excellent time to look at the resources you have available so that you can fill any knowledge gaps.
If you find that you don’t have leadership or finance experience, for example, you can use your educational benefits to go back to school and earn your master’s degree.
Online programs now exist that will allow you to continue to take care of your family while working toward building up your abilities in these and other crucial areas. In addition to hard skills, entrepreneurs do best when they are flexible, creative, and self-motivated.
Startup strategy
You’ll also need to decide on a startup plan. For many of us, this begins with choosing a business structure. You’ll also need to develop a sales and marketing plan for your products and services.
Determine your target market, and research your competitors’ marketing strategies. This is also the time to figure out how much funding you’ll need to get your startup off the ground.
Invest in accounting software
Keeping accurate and current financial records is an essential component of running a business. With cloud accounting software, you can manage invoices, pay your employees, and store digital receipts.
This software can also help keep your business in compliance come tax time, and you’ll have instant access to cash flow insights.

As a veteran, you have a virtually unlimited range of choices when you’re deciding on the best type of business for you. Once you evaluate your skills, start with that.
But, if you want to do something completely different, you have options as well. A few great businesses to start, even if you’re on a small budget, include:
- T-shirt design – We’re going to go out on a limb here and say that t-shirts will never go out of style. And, today, more than ever, text-based shirts are all the rage. Even without design experience, it’s easy to create word-based art that you can upload to online drop shippers and sell on your own website.
- Private security – You’ve already proven your bravery on the battlefield, and you can take the rock steady nerves you’ve developed over the years to keep other people safe. You can start your own security firm by first completing any pertinent requirements – for example, you may have to take a training course, according to Design Hill.
- Blogging – Because of your military background, you likely have a set of experiences that other people can learn from. Consider starting your own blog, which will cost you little more than a website.
When it comes to launching your own business, your options are virtually unlimited. But, you do have to do your research and a bit of self-reflection before you get started.
You also want to pay close attention to how you launch and begin on a solid foundation, which includes having your business structure and marketing tactics outlined from the beginning and working with reliable accounting software.
