Do you adore being in the company of other people? Are you the life of the party? Do you get an unrelentingly strong blast of energy from everyday interactions with folks?

You might currently be screaming “Yes!” at me through your desktop, laptop, phone, tablet or whichever other electronic device you’re using. In this case, I think that I may have found the ideal occupation for you.

Let me be candid with you, I don’t know much about being an extrovert. To be completely honest, I would never describe myself in this way in a million years. I have to tell you, people confuse and scare the hell out of me in equal measure.

However, something I do know is that being outgoing and charismatic can really be a massive benefit.

This is especially true when it comes to doing a catalog and flyer distribution job. Markedly, I know this because I have previous experience in the realm of flyer distribution work.

Studies show that there are more extroverts in the world than introverts, well over 50% (Myers-Briggs organization).

For this reason, extroverts have strength in numbers. From this, it seems to me that society in general is mostly built to satisfy more extroverted people as a whole.

“I was a very extrovert kid. It felt normal to me to act.”

Some people love interacting with others and being in the spotlight. Regardless, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. If anything, it can be a big advantage.

Many of the day to day tasks of catalog distribution marketing will involve interacting with lots of people and winning their favor. You will essentially be convincing them to hand over their money.

I’m sure you can see how someone who isn’t extroverted might struggle in this aspect. For this reason, you should really give this a go if you are indeed a self-described social butterfly.

Let’s now go into more detail about how and why this is such a good fit for the outgoing extroverts of the world.

Do flyer distributors have lots of contact with recipients?

As a catalog distributor, most of the job will involve conversing with your customers. In my experience, you will be knocking on doors. In addition, you will also retrieve catalogs and order forms from the people you distribute to.

You may have to talk with people in other distribution jobs like delivering flyers, leaflets and posters too, but to a lesser extent.

Do flyer & catalog distributors get to meet new people?

Why do extroverts make good flyer distributors? Catalog distributors, in particular, get the chance to meet lots of new people while on the job. Moreover, if you are an extrovert then this should excite you.

Catalog distributors will meet many more people in their careers than the average person would ever meet.

Will flyer distributors get opportunities to make new friends?

You will be knocking on lots of doors. It’s possible to make some good friends doing this kind of distribution work. In like manner, this is true not only with your customers, but also with your colleagues.

You could easily find yourself becoming fast friends with the unlikeliest of people, from my experience. Even if it’s someone you believe that you have nothing in common with like that little old lady who lives down the street.

Do flyer distributors get approached by people on the job?

I would say that door-drop distributors will have the least human contact in their work. This is because they are just delivering flyers and leaflets to residences and other buildings.

Furthermore, there is very little human contact here which some people don’t mind (myself included).

Although, don’t be sad, my extroverted friend. The public might ask you questions in regards to what you are distributing. Prepare yourself to appear approachable and friendly.

Interactions in this position probably won’t happen that frequently. However, you will be most efficient in this scenario if you keep yourself informed about what it is you are distributing. This way you will look professional and never be caught off guard.

How should flyer & catalog distributors talk to customers?

  1. Introduce yourself
  2. Tell the customer why you’re knocking on their door
  3. Demonstrate how a product may benefit them and try for a sale

You will need to speak clearly. Make sure that the point you are trying to get across has clarity as well. You will need to be able to win people over. Convince them to buy from you if you want to do well in this endeavor.

Some distribution jobs won’t require you to do be this extroverted. Conversely, it will if your job involves distributing catalogs.

It will be like running your own business (of sorts). You will be responsible for your own success or failure for the most part. Tough love, I know.

What attitude do I need to succeed in flyer distribution work?

In my opinion, a smile combined with a friendly manner can go a hell of a long way. This is true for any kind of distribution job, not just for catalogs.

My advice is to always be friendly and polite when distributing. With this in mind, do this even if you don’t end up making a sale.

Try to develop good relationships with your customers. Perhaps it will then reach the point where you can refer to them as loyal customers.

Should flyer distributors try to make a good impression?

People generally don’t like people selling things AT THEM. It’s vital that you make a good first impression because of this. Even if you don’t end up with a lead or sale, you should be polite at all times.

If you can appear likable then the customer will have a positive memory of you next time you knock on their door. Consequently, there will be a better chance of netting another order from them.

Oh, I remember you. You’re that nice young man who sold me a vacuum cleaner nozzle last week” … or something along those lines, hypothetically.

Do flyer distributors need good communication skills?

You will need to have some decent people skills. Catalog distribution work will involve interacting with strangers a lot of the time. After all, you’re trying to convince someone to accept the advertisement that you’re offering them.

You can even go a step further and talk them into buying something from you in commission-based distribution jobs.

This will involve talking to people who receive your catalogs. Correspondingly, be prepared to communicate well. Merely reading a catalog sometimes isn’t enough on its own.

Do I need to be good at building & maintaining relationships?

Many purchasing decisions are built on trust, more than you think. Additionally, if a distributor has good chemistry going with their customers then that’s great. I find that if people like you as a person then they will be more likely to buy from you.

Do flyer distributors need to understand their customers?

Doing any sort of sales-based job involves getting into the nitty-gritty of people’s purchasing habits. You will need to learn to understand the wants and needs of the customer.

If you can do this then you will also be able to find out how a product might help and benefit them the most in their lives.

Do flyer distributors need an extroverted personality type?

It helps to form a friendly bond between yourself and your customers as a flyer distributor. You will need to be quite a sociable, outgoing and charismatic person.

If you can pull this off then you will perform better than other rival catalog distributors in your area.

Confident and friendly extroverts will naturally have more success in this line of work. You need to make a good first impression as a distributor.

Does a catalog distributor need to be a good salesperson?

To be blunt, it’s not enough to talk to people when doing catalog distribution work. You will be responsible for getting leads and sales out of them. It doesn’t hurt to have a silver tongue.

Do catalog distributors need previous experience in sales?

It helps if you have working previously in a sales-based job such as telesales like I have. Yes, I’m well aware of how annoying sales calls are.

This will help you too as you will need to be good at selling in catalog distribution jobs. Cleary, you will require a transaction to take place if you want to make money.

Not everyone is good at this. Think long and hard about it before you make the decision to enter catalog distribution work.

Will flyer & catalog distributors get repeat customers?

One thing you will find in a catalog distribution job is that you will occasionally obtain repeat customers. A lot of catalog distribution work is to do with building up a loyal following of customers. These people will probably make repeat purchases.

Show people that you are loyal and trustworthy. They will more likely to buy from you this way.

These truly are diamonds in the rough, let me tell you. For this reason, it’s important that you stay on good terms with these people. You will be wise to do this if you want them to buy from you for a second, third or fourth time.

Find yourself a loyal customer. They will likely place multiple orders with you from whichever catalog you are distributing.

Is word of mouth a factor in flyer & catalog distribution work?

Word of mouth is a significant cornerstone of catalog distribution work. This is true for any other sales-based job for that matter. A good impression goes a long way.

Perform well as a catalog distributor. If you succeed then that particular customer might pass this goodwill on to their friends and family. If you are lucky enough for this to happen then you have a greater chance of bagging you some new customers.

Keep up the good work and the process will likely repeat itself. It will continue to branch out, hopefully creating a sort of domino effect.

Is word of mouth always relevant in a flyer distribution job?

Word of mouth isn’t such a big deal if you are a door-drop distributor. You will just be putting flyers and leaflets through doors. This doesn’t really require any talking or convincing on the flyer distributor’s part.

You can let the advertisement speak for itself in this situation. This is true unless a customer comes up to you and asks a question, for instance.

Can I ask customers to tell their friends about me?

If you want, you can even be bold and ask the customer to refer you directly. Ask them if they wouldn’t mind spreading the word about you next time they get the chance.

You will be multiplying your sales and leads. This is nothing but a good thing in catalog distribution work, as you can imagine.

Do flyer distributors need permission to distribute posters?

In some cases, you will have to ask permission to distribute flyers and posters. This is relevant in certain places such as stores and other businesses.

For example, you may want to put a poster up in a store window. For this, you will need to run it by someone who works there. It’s smart to have the green light from them.
