You may be surprised to discover (as I was) that flyer distribution work has many more benefits than just the money it puts in your pocket. Sure, money is nice, but so is your own physical well being. Personally, it took me much longer to learn this than it should have.

Flyer distribution companies primarily pay distributors to deliver advertising material. The secondary by-product or side effect of this job is the fact that you are breaking a sweat and getting out in the great outdoors.

Why pay for an expensive gym membership when you can exercise outside and get paid for it at the same time while working as a flyer distributor? Doesn’t this seem both more efficient and logical to you?

You might even be an individual who has set themselves the goal of:

  • getting fit/healthy
  • losing weight
  • just staying in tip-top physical condition

However, it doesn’t matter if these aren’t your current circumstances either. If you fall into any of these categories then a flyer distribution job might just be the ideal occupation for you. When it comes down to fitness and exercise, flyer distribution work is great for both the expert and the novice.

You will be multitasking by getting fit and making money as a flyer distributor at the same time. How cool is that?! Clearly, this will involve a lot of walking as you can probably imagine, however you can also cycle if you wish. This has got your cardio exercise needs covered for sure.

Let’s take a more in-depth look at how you can improve your fitness while distributing flyers, posters, catalogs and leaflets. We can also see how physically fit you need to be to truly excel at this job. From this, you can hopefully discover if flyer distribution work will suit you or not.

How physically fit do flyer distributors need to be?

Rest your mind and body at ease. Flyer distributors won’t necessarily need to be in great physical condition right out of the gate. Nobody is asking you to be an accomplished Olympic athlete like Mo Farah. I can honestly say that I was really unhealthy when I started doing this job and it didn’t hinder me too much.

However, all distributors will need to be capable of doing light exercise at a bare minimum. By this, I mean walking for most of the day at a steady pace. It’s not a huge ask by any means, in my opinion. Most people who aren’t flyer distributors have the capacity to do this much at the very least, so you should be fine.

How much exercise do flyer distribution jobs generally involve?

Certain flyer distributors will stand stationary on a high street giving out flyers or leaflets to passers-by. Clearly, there won’t be as much walking involved in this type of position. This is much more enticing for lazy people like me.

What kind of exercise will flyer distributors be doing?

Flyer distribution will involve a lot of walking. You will be carrying a big bag of advertising material too which will make any exercise even more strenuous. You need to be in decent physical condition as a distributor for these two reasons alone.

How far will flyer distributors have to travel?

From my experience, employers normally assign flyer distributors to one area for the day. For door-drop distributors, it might be a block of houses in a residential area or what have you. You could potentially be walking up to 70 miles per week so it’s important that you know what you’re letting yourself in for.

Some of the top door-drop distributors walk over 10 miles in one day covering upwards of 1000 properties, in some cases. Many consider this to be a maximum but you still might want to prepare yourself to cover this distance. It’s quite a lot of ground you’re covering when you think about it.

However, this is something that flyer distributors can work up to and if you can’t do it right away then that’s not a problem. Bear in mind, this is likely the most distance you will ever have to walk in this job. Chances are that it will be significantly less on an average day. Phew.

How quickly do distribution workers have to distribute?

There normally isn’t as much of a rush in poster distribution. Poster distributors are sporadically putting up a handful of posters in locations for lots of people to see. It doesn’t have the same fast pace of flyer or leaflet distribution.

You’re going to be on your feet most of the day while distributing flyers or leaflets so a strong and speedy walking ability is a bonus. You will need to distribute a certain number of advertisements in a limited time so you can’t always walk at a leisurely pace.

Will flyer distributors be carrying a heavy load?

It can really up the ante if distributors are lugging around thick, bulky catalogs and brochures. Some distribution employees choose to drive a car on the job because of this. Although, if that isn’t possible you may be provided with a cart or trolley by your employer.

Will my health & fitness improve when doing a flyer distribution job?

Being fit isn’t mandatory as I find that you can become fitter and more experienced as you go by learning on the job. Distribution employers are willing to give most new distributors a chance to prove themselves. This is generally true no matter what their physical fitness.

The physical strain of flyer distribution work will become much easier the more you get into the habit of doing it, I can assure you.

Should I take steps to improve my fitness for this job?

If your physical fitness isn’t great then you can take action to improve this with regular exercise. You could do things in preparation like playing sports in your free time or you could take up jogging on a regular basis like me. It helps to build up stamina but your walking will improve with experience on the job anyway.

Do flyer distribution employers have a preference for hiring fit people?

Flyer distribution companies may have more of a desire to hire distributors who are at least moderately athletic over others of lesser fitness.

They will want as many distributions completed in a short a space of time as possible. They need this in order to get the most productivity out of their workers. This makes sense to me from a business perspective as I’m sure you will agree.

Is catalog distribution work more physically grueling?

The downside of catalog distribution is the extra weight that you are carrying while on your rounds. Obviously, one catalog or brochure is much bulkier than a single flyer. A distributor will need the strength and fitness to bear the extra brunt of this.

Catalog collection can be a pain too. You are just piling on weight to what you are already carrying as you collect more and more catalogs throughout the day. It can sort of feel like you are the donkey in a game of buckaroo.

Do employers give flyer distributors targets to hit?

Door-drop distributors will usually receive the objective of distributing all of their leaflets by the end of the working day. For this reason, you will have to make sure that you are moving fast enough to ensure that you meet this objective.

On the other hand, I have found in my experience that distribution employers can be quite forgiving if you don’t meet targets. Missing targets is sometimes okay as long as you are showing that you are doing your best.

Can flyer distributors take a bicycle with them on their rounds?

You might be a keen cyclist. If this is the case then some employers allow you to take a bicycle with you while distributing. Although, this isn’t possible for all distributor positions as certain employers won’t allow it.

You can do this or just distribute flyers and leaflets on foot if it suits you. Cycling is easier for some distributors rather than hiking. I’m sure you will have your own preference either way.

Catalog distributors may find a bicycle more useful. This is because they can store all of the heavy catalogs and brochures possibly in a basket or on the back. It can be a major lifeline, in my view. Having a bike will save you the energy of carrying the heavy load on your back.

Are there times when flyer distributors won’t need a bicycle?

Alternatively, not all flyer distributors have a need for a bicycle. You might find it to be an inconvenience more than anything else.

Bicycles can be great if there are long distances to cover between distribution targets. It can be less good if you are a door-drop distributor. Distributors might find that they will be getting on and off the bike constantly as they go from door to door, slowing you down. You can see how this might be a problem, right?
